The movie is about a young man who discovers the community of dhobis, the people who wash clothes in India. The story revolves around Kharak Singh, an affluent Bengali-speaking Brahmin living in Benaras. He falls in love with Shanti, a beautiful but poor Brahmin girl, Forbidden by her parents to marry him, she must remain chaste and unmarried for life. Kharak is unable to marry another woman of his caste and forsakes his wife of many years for Shanti’s love. Khara (Vir Das) is an Indian guy, who runs away from his family to go study in America. He lives with a hostel mate Raunak (Kunaal Roy Kapur) and they become close friends. Khara is in love with Shanti (Soha Ali Khan), the daughter of his landlord (Rajesh Sharma). She reciprocates his feelings, but Kharak's father will not allow him to marry her because she is of the lower caste of Dhobi. Shanti’s parents are orthodox people who do not want their daughter to get married without their permission. Shanti’s parents realise that they cannot keep them apart and allow her and Kharak to get married. Upon their return from their honeymoon, Kharak and Shanti move into a big bungalow that belongs to his family. Khara gets a job of writing for an online news company in India. He becomes close friends with his boss Suresh (Adil Hussain). When he meets his boss again after two years of not meeting him, Suresh tells him that he has sold the company to new owners who changed everything including the staff so Suresh had no choice but to leave. Khara and Raunak leave for India to look for Suresh and ask him to join them but they cannot find him and return and move into the big house. They all live happily in the bungalow until one day, Shanti’s father gets a call from the company where his son works that he has stolen money. When he goes to see Khara, he finds that his son has stolen all of Suresh's belongings. After all this, Kharak’s father refuses to speak to him ever again. A heartbroken Kharak and Shanti move back to their own house. Khara then meets Suresh and his girlfriend (Lily Chakraborty) and the three decide to look for Khara and Raunak through Kharak's friend's phone records. At the end of the movie, they all reunite once again. The film has received positive reviews. "Hindustan Times" rated it 3 out of 5 stars.
